KELAB Hoki Ais Saga (Khas) has decided to start a fundraising programme for R. Murugan's medical treatment and kidney transplant.

Khas patron Datuk Lee Hwa Beng said they were concerned over Murugan's plight and were keen to help in all ways to lead a normal life.

“The best option is for him to have a transplant. We have spoken to him and he has made some enquiries in India. He needs about RM75,000 for the transplant. We hope the public will come forward to contribute to the fund,'' said Lee after handing over RM10,000 to Murugan after Khas' Ice Hockey Cares programme at the Pyramid Ice recently.

The sum was raised from two events initiated by Khas to ease Murugan's medical expenses.

The 30-year-old Murugan, a member of the medical assist team during Khas’ ice hockey activities, is suffering from end-stage renal failure and has been on haemodialysis since 2004.

Khas had set up a booth at the Pyramid Ice as well as organise on-the-ice activities to raise the sum.

The public had the opportunity to take part in the shootout game and a learn-to-skate programme for a minimal fee.

The supporters were Rosemead, Pyramid Ice, Robert Lam and Karcher Malaysia.

Last year, Khas initiated a fundraising programme – a charity ice hockey match and car-washing campaign – to help Felicia Guan, diagnosed with brain tumour, realise her last wish to visit Hong Kong Disneyland.

Khas vice-president Susan Loh said they were grateful to all who had supported their programmes.

Dexion Asia managing director Frank Johnstone said they were proud to be associated with Khas.

“Khas have proven that they cared for less fortunate. They have been involved in several community-based programmes,'' said Frankstone.

Murugan said he was touched by Khas' efforts and thanked them for the financial assistance.

“Datuk Lee has also promised to help me,'' said Murugan.

At the same programme, Khas also presented mementos to three hockey players - Tony Ryan, Wade Oldford and Chris Doyle - who will be leaving Malaysia after their job commitments.

Loh said the trio had been supportive of Khas programmes.

“Besides playing in the league, they had also provided Khas with equipment. We appreciate their contribution to Khas efforts in the promotion and development at the grassroots,'' said Khas.
